Alberta Government Commits $40 Million to Contemporary Calgary’s Capital Renovation and Expansion Project

Calgary, AB – The Government of Alberta has announced a $40 million investment in the final phase of Contemporary Calgary’s ambitious Capital Renovation and Expansion Project. This funding commitment, beginning in 2026, will help transform the historic Centennial Planetarium into a world-class contemporary art institution, further positioning Calgary as a leading cultural destination.

“This investment reflects our government’s belief that great cities must offer exceptional arts and cultural experiences,” said The Honourable Tanya Fir, Minister of Arts, Culture, and the Status of Women. “By supporting Contemporary Calgary’s transformation, we are preserving an architectural landmark while ensuring it remains a thriving space for Alberta artists and arts organizations to showcase their work on a national and international stage.”

The funding is conditional on Contemporary Calgary securing the remaining financial support needed to complete the $150 million project. To date, $100 million has been invested or committed through support from the City of Calgary, the Federal Government, private donors, and other partners. With today’s announcement, Contemporary Calgary will turn its attention to securing the final $50 million needed to bring this visionary project to completion.

A Bold Vision for the Future

Under the leadership of David Leinster, CEO of Contemporary Calgary, the transformation of the Centennial Planetarium will enhance public engagement, provide new spaces for artistic programming, and establish a cutting-edge cultural hub for the city.

“We are deeply grateful to the Government of Alberta for this transformational investment,” said Leinster. “This funding marks a significant step toward realizing our vision of creating a leading contemporary art institution that fosters creative dialogue and innovation. With this support, we are one step closer to providing Calgary with a dynamic space where local, national, and international artists and audiences can connect.”

Designing a Landmark for the Next Generation

Designed by KPMB Architects with GGA in Calgary, the final phase of the project includes the construction of a new Entrance Pavilion, a state-of-the-art Art and Education Wing, and the renovation of the historic planetarium, including Canada’s first LED Dome experience. The expanded facility will provide world-class gallery spaces, education centers, and a rooftop event venue to support long-term financial sustainability.

“This project is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine an architectural gem and create a space that is both innovative and deeply connected to the community,” said Bruce Kuwabara, O.C., Founding Partner, KPMB Architects. “The combination of historical preservation and contemporary design will set a new benchmark for cultural institutions in Canada.”

A Catalyst for Downtown Revitalization

As Calgary continues to focus on the revitalization of its downtown core, Contemporary Calgary’s expansion will serve as a cornerstone for community engagement, economic development, and the cultural vibrancy of the city. By reactivating a historic site and incorporating green space, public art, and accessible programming, the project will provide significant benefits for Calgary’s residents and visitors alike.
