About the artwork:

Future Memories, 2019
(Alberta seeds, paper, ferric, ammonium citrate, potassium, ferricyanide, hydrogen peroxide & UV lights)

The earliest stars produced and dispersed the first heavy elements that resulted in the formation of solar systems like our own. They traveled and expanded and are ultimately responsible for the creation of our planet Earth. Fascinated by the power of stars in the cosmos to create new solar systems, Graham draws parallels between stars and the botanical world. The inherent nature of seeds to explode, expand, disseminate and travel to create new, complex ecosystems is a profound microcosm of the universe while also recalling the importance of seed preservation in what many consider our Anthropocene age.

About the artist:

Rocio Graham is a Calgary-based artist who emigrated from Mexico in 2002. She studied art at Emily Carr University and at the Alberta University of the Arts where she obtained a Bachelor of Design in Photography in 2017. Her work is at the intersections of art and science heavily influenced by her interest in life cycles, natural systems and knowledge of botany. She explores the landscape from a body engagement perspective, where labour, mysticism, science, and temporality merge. She is currently a peer residency coordinator for the AUArts Hear/d art residency and as an art advocate she sits in various board of directors including Elephant Artist Relief Society, Spanic Arts and Seities Magazine. She strives to build community and support networks for artists; a commitment that is exemplified by the garden studio that she created at the Women’s Centre of Calgary. Rocio is also represented by Christine Klassen Gallery.
