UNGANISHA: Explore. Connect. Dance.

Saturday, February 25th | Showtimes: 2:00 & 7:00 PM

To help increase awareness of Black History Month in Calgary, and the public understanding of diversity and history of the African diaspora. This in-person production of UNGANISHA: Explore. Connect. Dance. offers an opportunity to educate audiences about the lesser-known origins of Hip Hop and Tap dance.

UNGANISHA, which means “Connect” in Swahili, will highlight the interaction of cultures that created each dance style, identifying each as both owing to African traditions and distinctly belonging to modern popular culture. Through movement, storytelling and historical contexts, we will journey through Tap and Hip-Hop to celebrate their genesis, their contemporary popularity, and their ability to connect people across cultures and continents. 13 dancers that participated in our July 2022, Black Arts Development Program's 3 Week Dance Intensive will showcase HipHop and Tap dances, choreographed by notable dance artists M'Kayla Kongnetiman and Sho-Tyme. The production infuses dance, music, theatre, film and history narration to build educational context, delving into the cultural and historical underpinnings of each dance form and its ties to African traditions.

Join us for the 6th iteration of UNGANISHA: Explore. Connect. Dance.
