Anton Ginzburg: Surface

Film Forms

Film Forms is a body of work that includes twelve sculptural studies and a video that are based on a mathematical algorithm of surface curvature developed with the Department of Mathematics at Technical University of Dresden, Germany. The algorithm uses sentiment analysis to interpret the scripts of twelve iconic films in 3D form. Commonly used by social media companies to assess patterns of consumption, the artist’s use of sentiment analysis in this manner underpins its cultural presence, while also lending it enough creative agency to generate artistic forms of its own. Ginzburg thus, tactfully uses the emotive power of cinematic storytelling to quite literally shape the sculptural form. The accompanying video is a durational visual representation of each sculpture’s evolution based on the interpretation of their respective film scripts.
